Obama to make first lesbian appointment

President-elect Obama plans to name Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Nancy Sutley, as chairwoman of his White House Council on Environmental Quality, a transition official said.

The selection is the first appointment of a prominent gay or lesbian to the administration, the official said.

The news about Sutley was broken by the Los Angeles Times, which reported: “During the 2008 presidential race, Sutley was a member of Hillary Rodham Clinton's California Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender steering committee. … Sutley has since entered the Obama fold.”

As the transition started, Obama named Sutley to the team reviewing the Environmental Protection Agency.

Obama plans to announce Sutley’s nomination later, as part of a package of environmental appointments.
