The First Annual Conference on Sexuality Studies in Thai Society

"Critiques of Knowledge and Practices in Sexuality Studies in Thai Society"

7 -8 January 2008

The Annual Conference on Sexuality Studies is the first forum of its kind. The Conference will provide space for presentations of constructive and non-stigmatizing academic knowledge in the studies of sexualities in Thailand

Although the awakening and interest in the studies of sexuality is currently increasing in Thai society, the development of methodologies, theories and concepts in the studies of sexuality in Thai society is not made suitable for the current situation of the cultural and social practices of sexualities in Thai society. This is partly because most of the studies of sexuality in Thai society have been unable to escape from the boundary of some prejudices and mythologies of sexual issues such as the social control of female sexuality, the negative attitude towards the sexual issues, and stereotyping and labeling the homosexuals, bisexuals, transsexuals and transgender people as sexual deviants.

The establishment of the exclusively academic stage of the sexuality studies is a way of serving to get free from that boundary. This stage will be a space for distribution, exchange and critiques of the body of knowledge of sexuality studies as well as the theoretical and conceptual bases influencing the studies of sexuality in Thai society. Moreover, it will make the academic institutions become aware of the importance of the studies of sexuality without bias. Above all, it will encourage the growth and development of the sexuality studies in Thai society to be modern and right for the current situation in Thai society, along with the academic world.

As mentioned above, it is necessary for Thai scholars and researchers, interested in the studies of sexuality, to have the exclusively academic forum of the sexuality studies in Thai society. Therefore, the First Annual Conference on Sexuality Studies in Thai Society will be held on January 7th – 8th, 2008 by The Southeast Asian Consortium on Gender, Sexuality and Health (Thailand); Institute for Population and Social Research, Mahidol University; Office of Human Rights Studies and Social Development, Mahidol University; Center for Health Policy Studies, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, Mahidol University, Women's Health Advocacy Foundation, Thailand; Anjaree Group, Thailand; Women and Youth Studies Programme, Thammasat University; and MA Program in Women's Studies, College of Interdisciplinary Studies, Thammasat University.
