I wouldn't call myself a movie fanatic. Neither am I a fan of lesbian or gay films. Just like the average Jane, I enjoy a movie or two when I have the time.

One of the recent movies I've seen is Beginners. First advertised as the story of Hal, a 75-year old man who comes out to his son, Oliver, after the wife dies.

This movie does not try too hard to be deep but achieves depth with the subtle way the story is told. Oliver reflects on his own life as a child very close to his mother, and begins to understand why Hal was never close to them. Oliver grows close to his father and witnesses how Oliver embraces the gay life.

Interestingly, this movie is not just about being gay, closeted and married. As the saying goes, "parents scar their children." This movie touches on the subject as shown by Oliver's rather tentativeness to get into relationships (he's single at 38). He meets a new girl named Anna and he goes through a process of opening himself and learning to trust and to love.

So worth my time. I give it 4 out of 5 stars
